From Unexpected Shower to Groundbreaking Invention

We’re thrilled to introduce you to an extraordinary woman who’s making waves in the world of invention. Meet Sirena Rolfe, a Denver-based digital marketing executive and the brilliant mind behind the Tempus Hood.

Sirena’s journey began in 2012 when she found herself caught in an unexpected rain shower without a hood or umbrella. That’s when inspiration struck, and she sketched out the idea for a lightweight, portable, water-resistant nylon hood that easily attaches to any jacket. Fast forward to 2019, and Sirena made history by receiving U.S. Patent #10,251,439 for her groundbreaking invention.

Sirena’s success isn’t just about her innovation; it’s also about the support she received. That’s where AYA Foundation comes in. Sirena connected with us through REI, where she was a speaker for their annual outdoor inventor cohorts.

“AYA has been very instrumental in getting me the coaching efforts as well as the business strategy for thinking about marketing Tempus Hood,” Sirena shared. “Getting involved with AYA allowed me to tap into resources that I didn’t know existed.”

Through AYA’s Clarity & Purpose coaching with Ms. Gwendolyn Crawford, Sirena was able to prioritize her goals and ideas. AYA also connected Sirena with our partners at SCORE Denver (the nonprofit arm of the Small Business Administration). SCORE has helped Sirena think through business strategies for licensing, marketing, and even becoming a patent coach herself.

Sirena’s achievement is even more remarkable considering she is only the 40th Black woman to be granted a U.S. patent since the 1860s. Only 3% of all U.S. patents go to Black inventors.

“I don’t take my place in history lightly,” Sirena shared, reflecting on the gravity of her historic achievement. “This has been a remarkable journey that has required me to trust my gut and trust the process over and over again. I hope my story inspires other women, especially women of color to pursue their dreams even when the odds are stacked against them.”

The Tempus Hood boasts unique patented design features, including a snap at the base that securely attaches to any jacket’s collar loop and an adjustable crown pull for a snug fit in any weather.

Sirena is now focusing on securing funding to increase production and marketing of the Tempus Hood and exploring licensing her design to major outdoor brands. Her story is also featured in the 2019 book “Be an InventHer.”

The Tempus Hood is a must-have accessory for women on the go. It’s stylish, lightweight, travel-friendly, and manufactured right here in Colorado.
