| Welcome to the story of Wild Boyd Farm, a Black-owned regenerative ranch nestled in the heart of Colorado. This isn’t just any farm; it stands as a tribute to Terrance Boyd’s unique journey. Once a musician skilled in piano and percussion, and a scrap metal worker with a background in cybersecurity, Terrance pursued his dream of freedom. He found it in the fertile Colorado soil. With a deep interest in the economics of farming, Terrance embarked on a self-taught journey into regenerative agriculture. This led the Boyd family to purchase a modest 10-acre homestead in Matheson, Colorado, in 2018. They started with barren land, but through determination, love and resolve, and a vision for sustainability, they transformed it into a thriving example of regenerative agriculture—where every crop and animal adds back to the vitality of the earth. Farming and homesteading are important parts of Black history and culture. In 1910, Black farmers owned between 16 to 19 million acres of land, according to the Census of Agriculture. But between 1910 and1997, Black farmers lost around 90% of their property, while white farmers only lost 2%. We may have lost a lot, but we are getting it back by returning to our roots. The Boyd family’s endeavor is now over 6,500 acres! On his land, on average, they nurture and care for 40 shorthorn cattle, 75 heads of Katahden sheep, 20 Boer goats, 2 heads of Nubian milking goats, 40 pasture Hampshire hogs, 1700 free range chickens and 30 egg-layer hens. Their clean meats and products are sold to individuals and to commercial clients (some schools included). This is the real deal. Not one acre of that land was inherited. This ownership is a result of pure grit, hard work, and dare we say, Sankofa (the concept of fetching from the past, what we need for the future).
